Caroli & Laubscher win at SARDA 1/12th Series Rd3
The third round of the 2017 South-African ORE 1/12th national championship series was held at the Welkom RC Arena this past weekend. With a tight 2017 RC racing schedule in South Africa some of the 1/12th drivers could not participate in the event but all the championship contenders were present for the four qualifying rounds and three finals. Most of the drivers arrived Friday for some practise and setup on the fast and very high traction track. Practice on Friday showed that the local Antonio Caroli and newcomer Hein Kotze would be drivers to beat in Modified and youngsters Brandon Solomon and Francois Laubscher in the 13.5T blinky stock class.

The third round of the 2017 South-African ORE national championship moved to the TRAP RC Venue in Pretoria. Free practise was held on Thursday and Friday with good winter weather in the Gauteng Province pleasing the drivers. The club did some good repair work on the track and a fast track with some technical sections proved demanding for most drivers. The strong 2017 Touring Modified class was represented by all the top and new drivers in South Africa and they pushed hard during the practice rounds and qualifying to achieve the best performance with their cars. During the practice rounds the local Liebenberg brothers showed great pace with their Capricorns while the Xray team mates Anderton Smith, Hein Kotze, Shaun Schutte, Antonio Caroli and Ashley Hurley also had great some great sessions.

SARDA 2017 Round 2 Race Report
The second round of the 2017 South-African ORE national championship moved to the Kwazulu Natal North Coast in South Africa at a newly build track Gear Raceway in Ballito. This new outdoor asphalt facility has a mixed layout with medium traction. It was the first time at the track for many of the drivers and the layout and ‘out-of-bounce’ grass took many victims during the weekend. It was evident from the start that the local driver and owner Deon Gove was the man to beat as well as Jason Hillcoat, Ashley Hurley and Hein Kotze who went to the pre-national practise weekend.
From the start the battle for TQ was between Jason Hillcoat and Hein Kotze. Jason took Q1 followed closely by Antonio Caroli and Hein Kotze. In Q2 it was Hein Kotze who had a great TQ run but his transponder failed to register his last laps and Jason took Q2 followed by Anderton Smith. Hein Kotze came out flying in Q3 with a great run but with Jason finishing second, the TQ position was all his on a better throw-away. The grid was eventually finalised in Q4 with Hein Kotze 2nd, Antonio Caroli 3rd and Anderton Smith in 4th.
South-African ORE national championship Rd1 – Report
The first round of the 2017 South-African ORE national championship was held at the Welkom RC Arena, host of the 2018 IFMAR ISTC 1/12th World Championships. It is fair to say that the facility has revived RC racing in South Africa and for the first time in many years there were five Touring Modified mains, a full 1/12th Modified main as well as a full main of 1/12th Stock. In Touring Modified and for the first time in many years over 46 entries ensured competitive racing and the drivers had to be at their best to qualify for the A-mains. The battle for the podium was really hot with great runs from Hein Kotze, Anderton Smith, Antonio Caroli and Ashley Hurley. After missing the first qualifying run it was Hein Kotze who put in great runs in Q2, Q3 and Q4 to secure the TQ spot. Youngster Ashley Hurley improved Alexander Hagberg’s 2016 record to 12.7s and showed that he was a force to be reckoned with by qualifying in 2nd with Antonio Caroli 3rd and Anderton Smith in 4th.
In A1 there were some accidents but it was Hein Kotze who took the win with Antonio 2nd and Jason Hillcoat managed a great 3rd after starting in 9th place. In A2 Hein Kotze was unfortunate to break his rear wing which allowed Antonio Caroli to take the win with Shaun Schutte second and André Greeff a good 3rd. In A3 Hein Kotze drove a perfect race to victory with Ashley Hurley second and again Jason Hillcoat achieved a fine third place. Continue reading South-African ORE national championship Rd1 – Report
